Terms, in plain English.

Plain English. The intent here is the contract.

What you’re paying for.

A one-time Starter Intake plus a subscription that includes hosting, the AI editor, ongoing admin availability per your plan tier, and the right to keep your family site online.

What you own.

Your source documents are yours. The structured data extracted from them is yours. The edits your family members make are yours. The audit log is yours. You can export all of it at any time.

We retain a license to host the data and render the site only for the purpose of running the service for you. We don’t use your data to train models, sell to advertisers, or build a cross-family graph.

What we own.

The site templates, the build pipeline, the extraction prompts, the editor UI, the brand. If you stop paying, you stop hosting with us — but you walk away with the data and the static-rendered HTML.

What we promise.

  • Five business days from your first upload to a live site (two days on Heritage).
  • A human reads every document we receive before the site goes up.
  • The AI editor proposes; the human approves. We do not auto-write to your Sheet.
  • Default-private. Public only when you flip the switch.
  • 14-day refund window on Starter Intake plus first month from the day your site goes live, no questions.
  • Full refund on Starter Intake plus first month if we ship a site with more than 10% factual errors, miss the SLA by more than 5 days, or lose a heirloom shipment.

What we don’t promise.

  • That your relatives will agree with how we modeled the family. The audit log + editor exist to make corrections fast.
  • That every document we receive will yield a useful site. If your material is too thin, we refund and tell you.
  • That the AI editor will catch every mistake. It’s a co-editor, not an oracle. The trust comes from the source-anchored citation, not from the AI’s confidence.
  • Cousin matching, DNA, or any feature we haven’t shipped. We don’t pre-announce.

What you can’t do.

  • Upload someone else’s family’s data without their permission. We’re a tool for documenting your own family, not for stalking or doxxing.
  • Use the AI editor to fabricate facts about a real person. The audit log makes this discoverable; we will close accounts that try.
  • Resell access to your site to non-family members for a fee. (Sharing with cousins, charging nothing — fine. Running a paid “research service” on our infrastructure — not fine.)
  • Use our infrastructure to host content unrelated to family history.

Cancellation, refunds, and what happens after.

See the pricing page for the full cancellation timeline. Short version: you cancel from the billing page, the site stays live through your paid period, then goes read-only for 30 days, then goes offline. You can export anywhere in that window.

Disputes.

Maryland law. Frederick County. Email hello@madeby1891.com first; we’ll likely resolve it without a court.

Changes to these terms.

When we change terms in a material way (new fee, new vendor handling your data, narrowing of your ownership rights), we email every active customer 30 days before the change takes effect. Trivial changes (typos, clarifications) we just ship.

If a future legal-reviewed version of these terms diverges from what’s above, the intent above wins.
