Terms of Use
These are the terms you agree to when you use Think ASL. If you're using Think ASL as part of a school subscription, your school's contract with us governs first; these terms cover what you, the user, agree to.
1. Who can use Think ASL
You can use Think ASL if you are an individual learner over 13 (or 16 in the EU/UK), a credentialed interpreter, or a student or staff member of a school or interpreter training program that has a contract with us. Students under 13 in the United States may only access Think ASL through a school-launched LTI session where the school is responsible for COPPA-compliant parental consent.
2. What you agree to as an individual learner
When you sign in with a magic link, you agree to:
- Use the account for your own learning, not share login access with another person.
- Not redistribute the lecture videos, video-texts, or quiz questions outside Think ASL.
- Not attempt to extract the recognizer model, the answer keys, or any other server-side asset.
- Not use Think ASL to harass, defame, or impersonate another person.
- Pay the published price for your tier when you upgrade past the free preview.
3. What schools and ITPs agree to via LTI 1.3
When your institution installs Think ASL as an LTI 1.3 tool, your institution agrees to:
- Use Think ASL as a school official under FERPA (US institutions) or as the controller under GDPR (EU/UK institutions).
- Provide students with notice that Think ASL is the third-party tool processing their educational record for this course.
- Manage roster sync through the LMS's NRPS endpoint — not via shadow uploads.
- Designate an admin contact for the per-school sub-sheet and for any deletion or export requests.
- Pay the per-seat annual licence fee at the rate quoted in your invoice.
Students of an LTI-integrated school don't separately accept these terms — the school accepts them on the student's behalf. Students still get the privacy protections in the privacy policy.
4. What you agree to as an interpreter on the CEU track
When you buy the interpreter tier, you additionally agree to:
- Use a single account — the cert is tied to the email on file.
- Not falsify your CEU certificate or transcript when claiming credit with a sponsoring body.
- Allow the public verification page at
/certificate/<cert_id>to display your name, the credit value, and the date of issue. You can request the name be redacted on the public page (see the privacy policy, section 7); the cert itself remains valid and verifiable.
5. What we agree to do
- Keep the service reasonably available. We aim for 99.5% uptime; we are not a financial-services-grade SLA.
- Keep your data per the privacy policy.
- Caption every video before it's considered production-ready. Slow-motion playback available on every quiz video.
- Keep camera frames on your device. Recognition runs in your browser; only parsed letters and digits reach our server.
- Honor your deletion and export requests on the SLAs in the privacy policy.
- Tell you in advance when we add a subprocessor or materially change these terms.
6. What we don't do
- We don't put Claude or any LLM in the live audio path. The product has no live audio path; the curriculum is silent video. If a future feature changes this, it will be opt-in with the captions-and-consent contract specified in the workspace's universal-design rules.
- We don't sell or share your data for cross-context behavioural advertising. Ever.
- We don't run third-party trackers on the learner-facing surface. No Google Analytics, no Hotjar, no Pendo, no Mixpanel.
- We don't auto-caption ASL. Captions are hand-authored English transcripts of the voice-over track.
- We don't score affect, attention, or any behavioural signal. The only thing we grade is the answer you submit.
7. Intellectual property
The 2011 textbook American Sign Language: Fingerspelling and Initialization is © 2011 Gary Eugene Mowl. The second edition revisions, the online edition, the lecture videos, the recognition software, the design system, and the site as a whole are © 2026 1891 / Anthony Mowl. The ThinkASL imprint name comes from Gary's own self-published imprint and is used here with the family's blessing.
You retain all rights in your own quiz answers and your own transcript. We use them to score, to render your transcript, and to inform you about your own progress; we do not use them to train a model.
8. Payments and refunds
One-time individual and interpreter purchases are refundable in full within 30 days of purchase. School and ITP licences are invoiced annually; cancellation midway through a billing year is not refundable, but you may export your data at any time.
If the CEU tier does not gain RID Academic Sponsor approval, we will refund the $50 difference between the individual and interpreter tiers automatically.
9. Termination
You may terminate your account at any time by emailing thinkasl@madeby1891.com. Your data deletion follows the SLAs in the privacy policy.
We may terminate your account if you breach these terms in a way that puts other learners or the integrity of the service at risk — account sharing at scale, attempts to extract answer keys, harassment of staff. We will tell you why and give you a chance to fix it first whenever doing so is reasonable.
A school's contract terminates when the school's billing year ends and is not renewed, or earlier on written notice from either side. On termination, the school's sub-sheet is exported to the school and deleted from our infrastructure within 30 days.
10. Disclaimers
Think ASL is provided "as is." We don't warrant that it will be uninterrupted or error-free, that it will meet your specific learning goals, or that it will be compatible with every LMS, browser, or assistive technology in every release. We do warrant we will hold up the privacy and accessibility commitments on this site.
11. Limitation of liability
To the extent permitted by law, our total liability for any claim arising out of your use of Think ASL is capped at the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim arose. This cap does not apply to claims of gross negligence, willful misconduct, or breach of the privacy commitments.
12. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Maryland, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-laws provisions. Any disputes that can't be resolved informally will be brought in the state or federal courts of Frederick County, Maryland. Schools and institutions outside the United States may negotiate a choice-of-law addendum as part of their contract.
13. Changes to these terms
We will post a dated, redlined update on this page at least 30 days before any material change takes effect. If you're on a school contract, we will also email your admin contact.
14. Contact
Email thinkasl@madeby1891.com for any question about these terms, a request for a Data Processing Addendum, or a contract redline.
